Brighton Station Goods Tunnel

The original 1841 station had a Goods Tunnel from the Shoreham line to the low level Goods yard, this ran under the platforms and was horse worked. Most likely construction was by Cut and Cover as the crest is only a short way beneath the platforms and much of the station plateau is made ground on the side of a hill.

During WWII the tunnel was fitted out with administration offices, still painted in Southern Railway colours.

The upper part of the remaining tunnel is used as a firing range, behind the butts have a loose soil fill where the access has been blocked

The outer (lower )end of the bricked up tunnel with sliding covers to windows,
they would be closed for protection in case of bombing.
